BIOGRAPHY OF DIONNA MARIA LEWIS, ESQ.

Dionna Maria Lewis, Esq., is a dynamic force in Washington, D.C., a third-generation native who has risen from the DC Public School system to establish herself as a prominent employment, civil rights, and commercial litigation attorney. As the Founder of District Legal Group, PLLC, Dionna spearheads a thriving litigation practice, representing clients in complex matters ranging from civil rights and labor disputes to business, contract, construction, and appellate law. Her work spans state and federal courts, administrative agencies, and national equal employment opportunity (EEO) matters, where her fierce advocacy continues to make a tangible impact.



Appointed by Mayor Bowser and confirmed by the DC Council in 2016, Dionna made history as the youngest person ever to serve as a Commissioner on the DC Board of Elections, ensuring election integrity and legal compliance in the nation’s capital. Her influence expanded when she was later nominated and confirmed as a Board Member for the DC Office of Employee Appeals, where she adjudicates cases concerning public employees’ rights, and as of December 2024, Dionna was appointed as the Chair of the Office of Employee Appeals Board.


Dionna’s leadership extends beyond the courtroom. She has earned national recognition as an award-winning attorney and dedicated public servant. Her voice has become noted in media outlets like NBC, ABC-7, Fox 5 DC, The Washington Post, the Baltimore Sun. Her extensive service record includes roles such as Past President of the Washington Bar Association, Second Vice President and General Counsel of the DC Democratic Black Caucus, and as a city wide elected At-Large Committeewoman to the DC Democratic Party. In each of these positions, Dionna has broken new ground, amplifying the voices of underrepresented communities and advancing critical legal reforms. Dionna is also a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.


A rising star in the legal field, Dionna has been recognized by Super Lawyers as a Rising Star (2019-2024), as a “Top 40 Lawyer” by The National Black Lawyers (2019-2024), a “Top 40 Under 40 Trailblazer” by the National Bar Association; the 2020 “Young Lawyer of the Year” by the Bar Association of the District of Columbia; “Young Lawyer of the Year” by the Washington Bar Association Young Lawyers Division; received the Rhonda F. Dionna was named “Mother of the Year” for the District of Columbia in 2020 by American Mothers, Inc., and continues to inspire as both a legal titan and devoted mother to her two young daughters.


Dionna’s academic foundation includes an L.L.M. in Litigation from George Washington University Law School, a Juris Doctor from Drake University, and a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and History from the University of Virginia. Her career is a testament to the power of perseverance, passion, and purpose, making her a beacon of leadership and a role model for the next generation.
